Immanuel Temple

Seventh-day Adventist Congregation of Durham, NC

                                                                                    Children’s Church

Children’s Church at Immanuel Temple is a wonderful and vibrant place where children ages 5-12 join together to worship and learn about Jesus.  Children’s Church takes place every 1st and 3rd Sabbath of each month, unless otherwise noted. On the occasion where there is a 5th Sabbath in the month, the Children’s Church program involves a service project or another Christ centered activity. We begin promptly at 11:15 am in the fellowship hall of the church. Children are included in all aspects of the worship service whether through prayer, praise and worship, or collecting the week’s tithes and offering.

The Children’s Church program is modeled after the regular church service while recognizing the unique needs of children. Thus, in addition to having the regular elements of the weekly church service, we also have hands on activities after the message where children use the Bible to delve further into topics covered or do a craft or practical application of the message. Birthdays are celebrated each month, and children leave worship with a healthy snack.

This year we are using the Come Meet Jesus Curriculum published by Review and Herald to model the week’s message and many of the activities. The curriculum introduces the children to Jesus- from Jesus the creator to Jesus the prophet, these lessons introduce many of the doctrines of our church including the healthful living, baptism, the Trinity, and the Bible as God’s word.

Below is the order of service that we follow each week:

Opening Song: Seek Ye First

Opening Prayer

Affirmation of Faith: John 3:16

Welcome: A time to meet our visitors and celebrate birthdays

Quiz of previous week’s lesson

Praise & Worship

Circle of Prayer: Children actively participate by sharing their prayer requests, testimonies and praying.

Meet our Guest: “Meet our Guest” is a unique and exciting part of the program where we invite an adult from the larger church family to share a personal testimony related to the week’s topic. Guests are encouraged to illustrate their testimonies with something visual to help the children engage in the testimony being shared.

Special Music: All children are invited and encouraged to share their talent whether through singing or playing a musical instrument, or through poetry.

Tithe & Offering: Children are encouraged to bring a tithe and offering to church. We have specially designed tithe envelopes for the children to practice giving.

Message: The “message” is a 10-15 minute lesson presented by an adult or teenager from the church. The message is often presented in the form of a sermonette or a skit.

Bible Learning Activity: After the message children are divided into three age groups (5-6, 7-9 & 10-12) where they do a craft related to the message, or participate in a Bible activity or discussion surrounding the message.
